Private Physiotherapy Built Around You.

Pain, injury or restricted movement can quickly start getting in the way of everyday life.

It might stop you exercising, make work more difficult, interrupt your sleep or simply leave you feeling less confident in what your body can do.

At Summit Physio, we take the time to understand what’s happening, what may be contributing to the problem and what you want to get back to.
From there, we create a personalised treatment and rehabilitation plan designed around you.

Physiotherapy Is About More Than Treating Where It Hurts

When something becomes painful, it’s natural to focus on the area that hurts.

But pain doesn’t always tell the whole story.

Your symptoms may be influenced by a combination of movement, strength, previous injury, activity levels, training load, work, lifestyle and how your body is coping with the demands placed on it.

That’s why your first appointment starts with understanding the wider picture.

We’ll listen to what has been happening, assess your movement and explain our findings in clear, straightforward language.

The aim is to help you understand the problem – not leave you with another list of medical terms.

What Can Physiotherapy Help With?

You don’t need to know the name of your injury before speaking to us.

If something hurts, movement has changed or you’re struggling to get back to normal activity, we can assess what’s happening and help you understand your options.

What Happens at Your First Physiotherapy Appointment?

We want your first appointment to give you clarity. You shouldn’t leave wondering what was assessed, what the problem might be or what happens next.

We Listen

Your clinician will start by talking through: Where you feel the problem.

The goal is to understand how the problem is affecting you, not just where it hurts.

We Assess

Your assessment will depend on your symptoms. We’ll only assess what is appropriate and relevant to your presentation.

We Explain

Once we’ve completed the assessment, your clinician will talk you through what they’ve found.

We’ll explain what we believe may be contributing to your symptoms and answer any questions you have.

We Create a Plan

If physiotherapy is appropriate, we’ll agree the next steps with you.

That may include treatment during the appointment, exercises to complete at home or a structured programme of rehabilitation.

What Does Physiotherapy Treatment Involve?

There isn’t one single treatment that works for every injury. Your physiotherapy plan will depend on the problem, your goals and how your body responds over time.

Exercise Rehabilitation

Targeted exercises can help improve movement, strength, control and confidence. Your exercises should progress as you do rather than remaining the same indefinitely.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on treatment may form part of your physiotherapy where appropriate. This can include techniques aimed at helping movement or temporarily reducing symptoms so you can progress with rehabilitation.

Strengthening

Strength is often an important part of recovering from injury and preparing your body for everyday activity or sport.

Advice & Education

Understanding your problem is an important part of recovery. We’ll explain what you can do, what you may need to modify and how to manage your symptoms between appointments.

Mobility Work

Where movement is restricted, we may use exercises and treatment to help improve mobility.

Movement Retraining

Sometimes changing how you perform a particular movement can help you become more comfortable or confident.

Activity & Load Management

Complete rest isn’t always the answer. Where appropriate, we can help you adjust activity while still keeping you moving.

Physiotherapy After Surgery

Surgery is often only one part of recovery.

Following your procedure, you may need to rebuild movement, strength and confidence gradually.

Our physiotherapists can work with you and any guidance provided by your consultant or surgical team.

Post-operative rehabilitation may involve:

• Restoring movement
• Rebuilding strength
• Improving walking
• Balance work
• Returning to everyday activity
• Returning to work
• Returning to the gym
• Returning to sport

Physiotherapy for Active People

A large part of physiotherapy is helping people get back to the activities they enjoy.

That might mean:
• Running
• Golf
• Football
• Rugby
• Cycling
• Gym training
• HYROX
• Walking
• Hiking
• Racquet sports
• Everyday exercise

Getting back to sport isn’t simply about waiting until the pain disappears.

Your body needs to be ready for the specific demands of the activity.

Physiotherapy FAQs

Your first appointment is about understanding what’s happening and giving you clarity about what to do next. We’ll start by discussing your symptoms, when they began, what affects them and what you want to get back to. Your physiotherapist will then carry out an appropriate physical assessment, which may look at movement, strength, mobility, balance or other relevant areas. We’ll explain what we’ve found, answer your questions and agree the most appropriate next steps with you.

There isn’t one treatment that works for every person or every injury. Depending on your assessment, physiotherapy may include exercise rehabilitation, strengthening, mobility work, manual therapy, movement retraining, activity and load management, and advice and education. Your treatment plan will be built around your individual needs and can change as you progress.

No. Physiotherapy can also be useful if you feel weaker or less mobile than you used to, keep experiencing the same injury, are returning to exercise or want professional advice before increasing your activity. You may also benefit from physiotherapy before or after surgery.

There isn’t a set number. It depends on the type of problem, how long you’ve had it, your current movement and strength, your goals and how you respond to rehabilitation. Some people may only need a small amount of guidance, while more significant injuries or post-operative rehabilitation can require longer-term support. We’ll explain what we recommend and review your progress as you go.

In most cases, no. You can usually book a private physiotherapy appointment directly with Summit without seeing your GP first. If you’re using private medical insurance, your provider may have specific referral or authorisation requirements, so it’s worth checking your policy before booking.

Wear comfortable clothing that allows your physiotherapist to assess how you move. Sportswear is usually ideal. Depending on the area being assessed, your physiotherapist may need to look at nearby joints and muscles as well as the area where you feel pain.

No. We see people with a wide range of problems including back and neck pain, knee, shoulder and hip problems, sciatica, muscle and joint injuries, post-operative rehabilitation, recurring injuries and everyday movement problems. You don’t need to be involved in sport to benefit from physiotherapy.

Where appropriate, treatment can begin during your first visit. The priority, however, is completing a proper assessment and understanding what may be contributing to the problem. That allows us to make sure any treatment or rehabilitation is appropriate for you.

Often, yes. Exercise and rehabilitation can help improve movement, strength and confidence and allow you to continue working on your recovery between appointments. We’ll explain what to do and why each exercise has been recommended.

Not necessarily. In many cases, activity can be adapted rather than stopped completely. Your physiotherapist can help you understand what you can continue doing, what may need to be reduced temporarily and how to gradually build back up.

Physiotherapy may help some people living with persistent or recurring pain. Your treatment may focus on improving movement and strength, building confidence, managing activity and helping you better understand the factors that influence your symptoms.

We’ll tell you. If your assessment suggests that another healthcare professional, further investigation or a different type of treatment would be more appropriate, we’ll explain why and advise you on the next step.

You can choose the clinic that is most convenient for you and provides the service you need. Summit Physio has clinics in Chorley, Wrightington and Manchester.
You don’t need to diagnose yourself before booking. If pain, injury or restricted movement is getting in the way, start with an assessment and we’ll help you understand what’s happening.
