Relax in a Comfortable, Pressurised Environment
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, often shortened to HBOT, involves breathing oxygen in a pressurised chamber.
At Summit Physio, sessions take place in our soft-shell hyperbaric chamber at our Chorley clinic, giving you time to relax in a comfortable and controlled environment.
Each session lasts approximately 60 minutes once the chamber is pressurised.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing oxygen while the surrounding air pressure is increased above normal atmospheric pressure.
Increasing the pressure changes the way oxygen is delivered around the body.
Summit’s soft-shell chamber operates at approximately 1.4 ATA and is designed to allow you to lie down comfortably throughout the session.
HBOT also has established uses within specialist medical settings. However, the evidence for wider recovery and wellbeing applications varies, so it should not be viewed as a replacement for appropriate medical treatment.
One of the biggest questions people have before their first session is:
What does it actually feel like inside the chamber?
The answer is usually much less dramatic than people expect.
You’ll step into the soft-shell chamber and lie down comfortably.
There’s enough space to relax, and you can bring something to keep yourself occupied during the session.
People often choose to:
Once you’re comfortable, the chamber is sealed and the pressure gradually begins to increase.
As this happens, your ears may feel similar to how they feel during take-off or landing on an aeroplane.
Swallowing, yawning or gently moving your jaw can usually help your ears adjust.
Once full pressure has been reached, you can settle back and relax.
Our chamber setup does not require you to wear an oxygen mask during the session.
You’ll be able to communicate with a member of the Summit team during your session if you need anything.
At the end of the session, the pressure is slowly reduced before you leave the chamber.
You may notice your ears adjusting again in much the same way as during the initial pressurisation.
If you’ve never experienced a hyperbaric chamber before, it’s understandable to wonder whether it will feel enclosed or clinical.
Summit uses a soft-shell chamber designed for you to lie down during your session.
Once pressurised, you can simply relax until the session finishes.
Sessions are available individually or as packages.
Some people are interested in Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy alongside a wider recovery or rehabilitation programme.
If you’re currently recovering from injury or surgery, HBOT should sit alongside, rather than replace, appropriate physiotherapy, rehabilitation and medical guidance.
Depending on your needs, Summit can also support you with:
Our soft-shell chamber allows you to lie down and relax throughout your session.
Set aside an hour to switch off while the chamber is fully pressurised.
Choose a single session or one of several multi-session packages.
If you have questions before your session, our team can talk you through what to expect.
Our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber is currently available at our Chorley clinic only.
HBOT stands for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
It involves breathing oxygen while inside an environment where the pressure has been increased above normal atmospheric pressure.
Summit’s HBOT sessions are approximately 60 minutes once the chamber is pressurised.
Not with Summit’s current chamber setup.
You can lie inside the chamber without wearing a separate oxygen mask.
The biggest sensation is usually in your ears.
It can feel similar to the pressure change experienced when an aeroplane takes off or lands.
Swallowing or moving your jaw can help your ears equalise.
Summit currently allows clients to bring items such as phones, books and tablets into the chamber to help them relax during the session.
It is a sealed soft-shell chamber, but it is designed with enough space for you to lie down comfortably.
1 session – £45
5 sessions – £200
10 sessions – £350
15 sessions – £500
20 sessions – £650
HBOT is available exclusively from Summit Physio’s Chorley clinic at David Lloyd Health Club, Moss Lane, Whittle-le-Woods.
HBOT has established specialist medical applications, but evidence differs depending on the condition.
NHS England currently commissions specialist HBOT services for decompression illness and gas embolism, while several other proposed uses are not routinely commissioned.
If you’re recovering from surgery, speak to your surgical or medical team before using HBOT.
