The right cafe style shutters for your home

Cafe style shutters cover only the lower section of a window — typically the bottom half or two-thirds — leaving the upper section open to natural light. They’re designed for exactly the situations where you need privacy at eye level without blocking the light coming in from above: street-facing rooms, ground floor windows in terraced properties and anywhere you spend time sitting within the sightline of a neighbour or a passing pedestrian.

The name comes from the style seen on the ground floors of European cafes and townhouses, where the same balance between privacy and natural light has been the practical solution for many years. In a Preston terrace, a ground floor living room that faces the street, or a bay window in Fulwood where the pavement is close to the glass, cafe style shutters solve that challenge simply and cleanly.

They’re one of the most popular shutter configurations we install. John will advise on the right panel height for your window at the consultation — where the shutter ends on the window varies depending on the window height, the room layout and how much natural light you want to retain from the top. Getting this right makes a noticeable difference to how the room feels.

A few things people usually ask us

Cafe style shutters typically cover the lower half to two-thirds of the window, but the exact height of the panel is agreed with you at the consultation based on your window, your room layout and how much light you want to keep above the shutter. John will advise on the most practical height for your specific window.

Yes — cafe style shutters can be combined with a roller or Roman blind above if you want the option of full coverage for evenings or when privacy across the full window is needed. John will discuss the options at the consultation.

Yes — cafe style shutters work well in bay windows, particularly where the lower section of the bay faces the street and the upper section is above eye level. Each section of the bay is measured and manufactured individually. See our bay window shutters page for more detail.

Cafe style shutters are manufactured bespoke and the lead time is 12 weeks or more from consultation. Nicky will confirm the current lead time when you get in touch.
